Parents of young Tottenham Hotspur fans don’t need to worry about buying confectionery for their children this Easter. Every Spurs fan will have a spring in their step in the knowledge that the world’s biggest clubs have given up the pursuit of their highly regarded manager, Mauricio Pochettino, for Lent.
Despite courting the Tottenham boss earlier in the season, both Manchester United and Real Madrid fans are satisfied with the appointments of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Zinedine Zidane respectively. The clubs’ boards have made nostalgic appointments that arguably overlook the potential troubles ahead.
In Zidane, Real Madrid have turned to the man who led them to three consecutive Champions League titles. However, the club were knocked out of European football before the quarter-final stages this year and are in need of a revolution. It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman, who previously resided over one of the continent’s strongest squads, is able to replicate his success with a different starting eleven.
Meanwhile, Manchester United have turned to an unlikely Norwegian saviour. While the club’s former striker has helped to reinvigorate the club following Jose Mourinho’s departure, it remains to be seen whether he possesses the tactical acumen needed in such a high profile role. He will also face scrutiny over his ability to restructure an ill-balanced squad.
Although Tottenham may be out of the running for the Premier League this season, they will play in the last eight of the Champions League in their long-awaited new stadium, under the watchful eye of a manager who is adored by players and supporters alike.
Solskjær and Zidane have both signed contracts at their clubs until 2022, while Pochettino’s contract runs for a further year. I’d be very surprised if any of them saw out their contracts. But for now, Spurs fans can enjoy some breathing space.
