The deal to take Adam Lallana from Liverpool to Brighton looks a great piece of business for everyone involved.
In a heavily truncated summer transfer window, in which clubs are likely to spend noticeably less than usual as a result of the financial implications of COVID-19, Brighton have shown that the early bird catches the worm. The club have signed a high quality player on a free transfer who will significantly improve their squad.
Lallana’s skills perfectly suit Brighton’s ball-playing style under manager Graham Potter. The midfielder’s ability to keep possession will certainly be a useful asset when the Seagulls’ are under pressure during matches.
While Liverpool have freed up space on their wage bill for another, younger player, Lallana himself stands to benefit significantly from the deal. While the 32-year-old may have been able to earn a higher salary elsewhere, his three-year contract will provide a player with a chequered injury record with a level of security other clubs would not have provided. As long as he stays fit, he will also hope to gain a lot more playing time on the south coast than he did in his final season at Liverpool. Although he made 22 appearances for the Reds, he only started three league games and was not involved after the season restarted.
