McLaren’s silence helps no one

December 8, 2014

McLaren’s refusal to announce their driver line up next season is becoming ever more unfathomable.  The drivers whose futures hang in the balance, Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button, will be infuriated by the delay.  If the issue remains unresolved for much longer, it will begin to impact on their preparations for the season ahead.

It has been reported that team boss Ron Dennis will have sole authority to decide which of the drivers will be retained.  It is unclear what he gains from prolonging the quandary.  He may believe he can strengthen his authority by prevaricating further, but he risks damaging team harmony.

Admittedly, he has a tricky decision to make.  Keeping former world champion Jenson Button would be the more popular decision with fans and sponsors.  Button also won more points for McLaren than Magnussen this season, making him a safer bet to help the team in their bid to become serious contenders for the constructors’ championship next year.

However, McLaren have invested heavily in Magnussen’s career and it is understandable they are reluctant to part with him now.  Either way, with Fernando Alonso already in place for the 2015 season, someone has to go.
