Lacazette: Arsenal saviour or overpriced reserve?

July 6, 2017

Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal hierarchy are convinced they have landed a major coup by signing 26-year-old French striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon.  Arsenal fans, who have repeatedly criticised the board for failing to invest large sums of money on new signings, should be delighted by the club’s willingness to break the club record transfer fee and complete a deal worth up to £52.6m.  However, although the player scored 28 league goals last season, many Arsenal fans are underwhelmed by the club’s marquee signing.

There are two major reasons for this.  Firstly, despite the success of former PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Premier League last season, many fans remain unconvinced by the competitive nature of Ligue 1.  Secondly, Arsenal fans are aware that for all of Lacazette’s undoubted talents, the striker has only picked up 11 caps for France, as his international manager Didier Deschamps prefers to play Gunners’ forward Oliver Giroud up front.  The club’s move for Lacazette will have unsettled Giroud and speculation continues to mount that he will leave the club in this transfer window, with the 30-year-old eager for more game time.  Coupled with the expected departure of Alexis Sanchez, and possibly Mesut Ozil, it becomes clear why Arsenal fans are worried their club are not taking the step forward they need to in order to challenge for the title next season.
