It’s bizarre that La Liga, which showcases some of the world’s greatest footballers, only introduced the Player of the Month award at the start of the 2013/2014 season – 19 years after it was introduced in the Premier League. Perhaps considering the dominance of Spanish sides in European competition, the provision of individual awards seemed superfluous…
Even more bizarre is the fact that a Barcelona player is yet to be crowned Player of the Month. The club may not look back fondly on the 2013/2014 season but you would understandably have assumed a club that has just won the treble and boasting the talents of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, would have received at least one award during the course of the season. In contrast, the award has been given to players in the Spanish capital nine times over the past two seasons.
Is something afoot? Is Messi losing sleep over the lack of recognition for his efforts? Probably not. But it will be interesting to see how long the trend continues and one suspects if Jose Mourinho was at the club, he would already have highlighted the issue to further motivate his players.
